Paying to Party

There is a trend going on for the past few years that I just don't understand...paying to go to a party at someone's house. One of our friend's had a New Year's party and the cost was $35/person. Someone is having a dinner party at their house and it is $10/person. Now I understand parties at bars often charge money but when I am invited to someone's home, I don't feel like I should be charged an entry fee. Yes, it costs money to throw a party but if you decide to have a party, you should take on the costs. BYOB or a potluck is something different (I would much rather actively contribute to the meal).

Maybe its a brilliant idea but I don't really like it. We just choose not to go to those parties.

Anyone else experience this?

I had no idea such a thing existed. It's extremely tacky if you ask me. It sounds as though some people are stuck in kegger mode. College is over and you need to buy your own booze people! I agree potlucks are more fun.

No! How tacky! If you need to be frugal, then make it a potluck or BYOB. Or how about setting a budget and sticking to it. When we had my husband's 30th birthday I rented a pontoon boat on Lake Shelbyville. No party barge for us because WE COULDN'T AFFORD it. We also supplied only budweiser and bud light. One friend complained because we are known as beer snobs, but WE COULDN'T AFFORD to purchase premium beer for 12 people when we also rented the boat and hosted a cookout.

This is something my age-group and younger do in Chicagoland...as far as I can see. I haven't experienced such a thing down here.

I don't think I would pay to go to a party at a friend's house. Very strange. Must be a young thing. Our friends are in their thirties (some now early forties) and I don't think would ever ask a guest to pay cash.

That being said, we have a yearly BBQ and ask every one to bring something. We fork out quite a bit of dough, but would never ask our friends to help offset the costs. Just a dish to share and if they want fancy beer or wine, they bring their own.

Never heard of it and wouldn't go to one (it's crazy)! If it was a good friend, I would tell her what I thought of her "brilliant idea"! hee hee

If instead of going out to dinner and spending a fortune what's wrong with a group chipping in (considerably less) a fair share for food ordered in? Especially when half of potluck food can be a little "off"

Last point was a good one...I've never heard of those kinds of parties and if I was throwing a party I would have a hard time asking people to chip in even if I secretly wished they would. I always ask what I can bring to someone's house b/c I appreciate it when people ask me the same.
